Tonight’s Eulogies / Bad Veins / Avi Buffalo show at The Echo has become a benefit show for the Pablove Foundation.

The Pablove Foundation was named for Pablo Thrailkill Castelaz, the son of Dangerbird Records co-founder Jeff Castelaz and his wife Jo Ann Thrailkill. Sadly, six-year-old Pablo passed away Saturday, June 27 after a 13-month battle with cancer.

In light of today’s events and in celebration of the life and work of Michael Jackson, The GRAMMY Museum has extended and repurposed the exhibit, Michael Jackson: HIStyle. Starting Friday 6/26, a collection of Jackson’s most iconic wardrobe pieces (including the suit he wore on the cover of the Thriller album) will be exhibited on the Museum’s third floor alongside video of some of his most exciting GRAMMY performances. This will all open to the public at 11:30am.

The Museum regrets having to e-mail under such unfortunate circumstances, but we hope this exhibit will serve as a fitting tribute to one of the most significant entertainers in music history.

Highlights include jackets worn on the Victory tour, at Jackson’s 1984 American Music Awards appearance, and at the dedication of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. All are elaborately bejeweled, beaded, and detailed – with one piece weighing nearly fifteen pounds. (source)

Curry Meatball Chicken Sub. $6.50

Vinh Loi Tofu is one of those addictive restaurants that’s so good, I can’t even describe it. Owner Kevin Tran actually operates his own tofu factory in the back of the 100% vegan establishment, which supplies Vinh Loi with the incredible protein for so many of their savory soups, sandwiches, noodle dishes and salads. While everything that I have ordered at Vinh Loi has been to my liking, I would most strongly recommend the faux meat subs to all newcomers and/or meat-eaters. Each Vietnamese sandwich comes packed with cucumbers, radishes, green chili and cilantro with your choice of creepily realistic (but tasty) soy “animal” meat. All that mess sandwiched in a crispy but chewy french bread roll, and you have yourself a winner. The curry meatball chicken sub is the most expensive, but it happens to be my favorite. Alternatively, you can get classic banh mi flavors like vegan beef or chicken for just $4.50 a pop! (seriously.) For an enormous vegan sandwich, that’s a really good deal.

This is the kind of food that you start chomping on with another person and for the next half hour the conversation is littered with outbursts like, “No, really this is so fucking good,” “….I know, right? God, this sure is amazing,” “Wow, this food is much better than i thought would be…” and then various chewing noises.

Although Vinh Loi has been around since 2003, I’d never even heard of the place until it started getting massive coverage from vegan food blog To Live And Eat In LA in 2007. Even with all the tempting pictures and gushing descriptions of the food, it still took me over a year to finally make it over there. Don’t make the same mistake I did, or else that will be another year and a half you will be missing out on the best banh mi Los Angeles has to offer. Whether you eat animals or not, this food is ready to impress.

Oh, and it doesn’t just stop at the sandwiches. Every single item on Vinh Loi Tofu’s menu is under 10 bucks. That includes gigantic noodle dishes, salad meals, curries, appetizers, and a slew of appetizers & desserts. Eat up…!

Ho, ho! Eno fans rejoice: 77 Million Paintings lands in the Southland, at last. I caught this exhibit, perhaps best described as a hefty coalition of the smoothest iTunes visualizers with which you will ever have the opportunity to space out, some two years ago at South by Southwest (read all about it here) and I do recommend you check it out during its run, whether or not you fork over the cash for this particular lecture featuring the master himself. At $100/seat this discussion is not for the frugal by any means, but if you’re an Eno nut (as I am) and you have at least one vintage edition of Oblique Strategies sitting around your house collecting dust (and/or being actively used), you’ll probably turn out for a chance at monopolizing the microphone and throwing a question or two to the master, while the rest of the auditorium groans with impatience. Discounts: $75 before August 3 or with groups of 12 or more; $25, CSULB students. See. You. There.

It is the end of yet another Americana icon.

Kodachrome first hit the shelves in 1935 in the form of 16mm movie film. 35mm slide film and 8mm “home” movie film came a year later. Ironically it was two musicians, not photographers that invented the miracle medium. Both had the first name of Leopold. After world war two masses of mom and pop photogs embraced Kodachrome and generously documented the colorful cultural explosion of Americana.

Kodachrome is a very luxurious medium to be documented in. When used correctly it lavishes its subjects with depth of light and shadow, clarity and a color spectrum unlike anything known to mankind. But processing the worlds most famous film is no easy task. It takes chemists working with cantankerous machinery to do the job. And, by the way, if you have Kodachrome film that needs to be developed now is the time because there is only one place left that can do it, Dwayne’s Photo in Parsons, Kansas. It’s probably going to take more than an hour.

Kodachrome slides changed my life. It was 1992; I was meandering through a thrift shop, which at the time wasn’t unusual for me, when a blue shoebox marked “Trip across the United States 1957″ caught my eye. I opened it up and it was full of slides. I held a few up to the light and knew immediately these orphaned Kodachromes were a treasure with my name on it. I haven’t stopped collecting slides since. I find slides to be little time traveler vehicles providing a quick and easy ride-a-long to another place and time. They are without a doubt my medium of choice when it comes to studying mid-20th century American life and style.

Kodachrome film may be gone but may the slide shows never end.
