Elvis Costello To Play Amoeba June 22
By Ryan - Tuesday June 09th 2009

HEADS UP
Elvis Costello @ Amoeba Records Mon Jun 22

Monday the 22nd is shaping up to be a big night – we’ve just added Elvis to the calendar, all three of our listings have the coveted thumb at present and we have yet to add all the usual free Monday weeklies that transpire all over town. From Billboard and the Amoeba website:freecostello

Elvis Costello is giving his fans more than a new album this month. The singer-songwriter will perform two free shows at indie retailer Amoeba Music in San Francisco and Hollywood, Cal. on June 22 to celebrate the launch of his new album “Secret, Profane & Sugarcane,” released last week on Here Music. The Amoeba gigs – at Noon in San Francisco and at 8:00 p.m. in L.A. – will occur between Costello’s tour dates with his current band the Sugarcanes and follow a secret show the artist did in New York on the day of his album’s release.

That’s right. We’ve gone off the deep end dining wagon. This is straight up ghetto. LAist recently did a study of the “fish dogs” at Wienerschnitzels hence it’s only right Losanjealous will now present the $2.99 Big Bite 1/4 pound hot dog from 7-11.

Charles Phoenix’s Slide of the Week: The “Folks” and the Fury, Pasadena, CA, 1964
By Charles Phoenix - Monday June 08th 2009

    folks

“Folks” is hand written on this slide. Do these “folks” realize they left their camera on the hood of their car? The camera is the Argus Seventy Five, mass-produced in Ann Arbor, Michigan between 1953 and 1958. The car is a 1961 Plymouth Fury.

Flaring, wrap around front fenders make this the one of the most spectacular designs ever to roll off a Plymouth assembly line. After five years of Plymouths sporting stylish tailfins the ‘61 model year is the first without. But the fashionable front end makes up for it. And this car is parked to show it off! The Plymouth logo, a gold anodized rocket, is centered on the stamped aluminum grille. The black and yellow California license plate gives scale to the delicate wrap around bumper. Among the cars other odd features are the dash mounted mirror and pushbutton transmission. Push “D” for drive or “R” for reverse. His sunshade is up; hers is down.

Drive & Find: Ep 2: Cafe Vida (Pacific Palisades)
By Brian and Mike - Friday June 05th 2009

cafe vidaWe started Drive & Find a few years back because, frankly, we were damn intimidated by the vast Los Angeles culinary scene. It’s a simple concept: two Westside dudes are hungry… they pick an area of town… they take a drive … they find an alluring restaurant … they dine there. This concept has brought us all around LA – from seafood to Thai to total crap – nonetheless our affinity for the unknown remains.

    DATE: Wednesday May 20th, 2009

    RESTAURANT: CAFÉ VIDA
    15317 Antioch Street
    Pacific Palisades 90272
    (310) 573-1335

THEIR SLOGANS: “Food for life” and “A great, fresh taste.”

OUR SLOGAN: “Food” and “A decent, not-everything-but-most-things-are-fresh taste”

    DRIVE TIME: 15 minutes

LIKES: Being really the only open restaurant in the area. Complimentary lime in the iced water. Interesting, loud conversation amongst four basketball apparel adorned high schoolers regarding chicks. Quiet streets.

DISLIKES: Identity crisis. A tad overpriced. Boring menu. Peeping Tom waitresses. An ugly dog sitting tableside in a striped carry-on suitcase-like apparatus.

Green Day & Franz Ferdinand @ Forum, On Sale Saturday–Win Tickets Now
    By Victor - Thursday June 04th 2009

    Green DayHEADS UP

Green Day & Franz Ferdinand @ The Fabulous Forum Tues 8/25 (On-sale Sat 6/6 10 am)

If you would have told me in the early 1990’s that Green Day and Pearl Jam would go on become the two most important American rock bands in the year 2009, I would have said, “Get the hell right out of here and close the door behind you, but leave me some of that pizza for later.”

And yet, here we are, nearly twenty years later, and the world is a very different place. We have a Black president, Conan is on at 11:30, our sub sandwiches are now toasted to golden perfection, and we watch According To Jim on our iPhones. And wouldn’t you know it, Green Day and Pearl Jam are right there at the top of the rock heap.

While we have no 2009 Pearl Jam dates for LA just yet (though hopefully expect some around the time they hit the coast for Outside Lands up north in August) Green Day have announced a Forum gig for August 25. Franz Ferdinand, no lightweights themselves, open the show while you are stuck in traffic on the 405.

Tickets are on sale with the usual KROQ pre-sale today at 10 am [password: KNOWYOURKROQ--get it?] with the general on-sale at the traditional 10 am Saturday.

BUT you can win tickets, right here, right now.

Join me next Wednesday, June 10, when I’ll be hosting Arts at the Park After Dark, an event in partnership with Generation Obama Los Angeles at Barnsdall Art Park (4800 Hollywood Blvd.) to benefit the Summer Night Lights Gang Reduction and Youth Development Program.

Beer Appreciation: Gordon Biersch Blonde Bock
    By Victor - Monday June 01st 2009

    G.B.B.B.

I’m not sure which intern stocked our 4th floor break room fridge with a couple of sixers Gordon Biersch Blonde Bock, but thank you. (Note to interns: this is how you earn your extra credit.) This is one of the finer G.B. offerings. It’s satisfyingly meaty yet somehow light. It drinks far richer than it’s 7% alc. disclosure. A couple bottles of these here in the 6 o’ clock hour on an empty stomach before dinner and you’re good to go.

    From the label:

Blonde Bock is a moderately hopped beer with a rich, malty flavor. Made popular in the 1600s, bock beers were originally brewed by monks to minimalize hunger pangs during fasting periods. Most bock beers are dark in color. Ours is golden with a rich cream head. Prost!

    Emphasis mine, all mine.

Under $10 And In No Way Advised: “Hot Dog Death March” (LA Metblogs)
    By Ryan - Sunday May 31st 2009

    nokidog

Ok, people. The mighty gurgitators of the LA Metblogs are having a Hot Dog Death March to the Death on June 13 (week from Saturday). Information is here. They’ll be eating at Oki-Dog, Pink’s and Skooby’s, all during the same afternoon. Maybe you join them, let us know how you fare. Me, I’m steering clear. In fact in no way and at no time do I recommend you join this event. No, I must advise against it. For reasons to remain unblogged at present I no longer condone any sort of social experiment regarding Oki-Dog, Hollywood Toll Booth, Day-glo Bastion of Toothlessness, North Fairfax, Willoughby, Tinseltown USA. I will not be at this event; I will not be at the Oki-Dog. I will be nowhere anywhere near this event, at all. Do not let this stop you.

LA Metblogs Leads the “Los Angeles Hot Dog Death March” To Sample 3 Eateries in 1 Afternoon

Calling all hot dog lovers & pop culture fans! LA Metblogs (la.metblogs.com), obsessed with covering everything quintessentially “LA,” is gathering for a mass “meat-up” over three of LA’s best-loved hot dog stands.

Charles Phoenix’s Slide of the Week: Oreo Billboard, Southern California, 1955
By Charles Phoenix - Sunday May 31st 2009

    cp_oreos

An enormous package of Oreo cookies jumping out of a TV, two giant little girls and white-lined red letters, spelling out what is short for National Biscuit Company, simply dwarf a sideswiped 1940 Dodge.

The giant little girls are properly dressed alike for TV viewing in matching puffed sleeved blouses and powder blue hair bows. One controls the TV while the other controls the Oreos. They are both about to take a bite out of the Americana sweet treat sensation they are suggesting we switch to.
