mission tikiPICK OF THE WEEK: Tiki Invasion @ Mission Tiki Drive-In

If I had to rank the greatest local tiki-themed drive-in theaters, the Mission Tiki Drive-In in Montclair would definitely make the top 5. But after Saturday’s Tiki Invasion, it might just crack the top 3. Ten bands including The Muffs and The 88, a Hot Rod and Classic Car show, three vintage cult classic movies, guest emcees King Kukulele and the mysterious jet-setting Johnny Nitro, a burlesque review, a bikini car wash, an attempt to break the world ukelele record and it’s BYOB. I like it like that.

    Ex-LAist Editor Reviews LA Blogs

It’s been a while since Jason Toney stepped down as editor of LAist which to be perfectly honest is good news because I really like his personal site which was all crickets while he was on board over there. Since…

    DECEMBERISTS? YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH! Whoo hoo!

  3. Ron : 8/1/06 at 1:57 pm

Roonie–you might be able to pick up presale tickets here: http://decemberists.ducatking.com

Are the Decemberists sold out? I can’t seem to find tix through their site for the Wiltern…

  7. Geir : 8/2/06 at 7:38 pm

Are the Decemberists sold out? Doesn’t look like there are tickets available through the Ducatking site for the Wiltern…

  8. V : 8/2/06 at 8:04 pm

Irene– don’t forget our 15% transaction facilitation fee.

Geir– do the ducatking registration and the link to buy tix will appear.

    I must be insane, then…
    Sat, Oct 21
    Doors at 8:00PM Wiltern Theatre
We were not able to find that many tickets in that section.

Did you guys have any luck?

  10. (MV) Pete : 8/3/06 at 2:36 am

Don’t forget Art Brut and We Are Scientists at the Fonda, September 30. I’m lukewarm on WAS, but Art Brut are gonna be insane. I’ll probably injure someone while spazzing out to “My Little Brother” or “Modern Art.”

  11. Geir : 8/3/06 at 10:53 am

And now the Dec’ists show isn’t even listed anymore at the Ducat King site. Sigh.

  12. V : 8/3/06 at 11:14 am

MVP, has a band ever managed to get more mileage out of the same 10 song set than Art Brut? It’s nearly a year they’ve been flogging that debut LP. (http://www.losanjealous.com/2005/09/07/new-on-the-lj-concert-calendar-art-brut) I’ve witnessed first hand the growth of their fanbase from their first LA gig at the Echo to Siren Fest a few week ago, while their performance remains basically the same. That’s how you make it in the States: move here and never get off the fucking road.

Geir, let me get Colin Meloy on the phone to figure this out. (He owes me one.) But you may be stuck with the regular Ticketmaster on-sale later this month. I’ll put the date up on the calendar when I have it.

  13. anonymous : 8/3/06 at 11:22 am

voxtrot… at the troubadour… on sale now bitches

  14. Geir : 8/3/06 at 1:21 pm

If Colin owes you one, this might not be the wisest way to cash in. :)

  15. (MV) Pete : 8/3/06 at 2:33 pm

V, Interpol. Interpol, V. They flogged Bright Lights for 18 months. I saw them playing to 500 people at a student union at Cornell in January ‘03, and then a year later–with the exact same setlist–they were playing 2500-seat megatheaters and 5000-capacity ballrooms. Not bad.

QUE ME ENCANTO MUCHO OASIS. UDS. SON MIS FAVORITOS. Y LOS HERMANOS GALLAGHER….SOY TU NOVIA!!!!!!! JAJAJA

V & MVPete, I must concur with you both. A band has to hit the road. And when they find a song the audience grasps, they have to play it. And play it. And play it. And play it. And play it. And play it. And play it. And play it. And play it some more. Then they play it. Following that, they must play it again. And play it. And play it. Allow me to share a personal anecdote with you, if I may…

December 1967. Duluth. Studio apartment. Keg party. I’m in attendance. Small band comprised of one very talented singer/multi-instrumentalist Robert Lamm and one James “Jimmy” Pankow on Bone and nothing but Bone. And a few other guys. They played a number that night entitled ‘The Time (Does any buddy really know what it iz?)’ . . .

As you may have guessed, that band was Chicago. Forty-odd years later, they crank out same cheerful dirge to crowds upwards of 300+ at Casino Morongo.

    Not bad, indeed.

    Not bad. R

Thanks for the Voxtrot tip, anon!
