Pics & Notes: Cults @ Fonda Theatre, March 22, 2012

Cults

Cults did kind of look like a cult when they played the Fonda Theater on Thursday. The band members all have long brown hair hanging past their shoulders and moved minimally around the stage, with only the light from brainwashy video projections illuminating them.

The dark imagery was a contrast to their signature 1960’s doo-woppy pop sounds. They performed a quick set that lasted less than an hour, with no encore. So many great songs from their debut self-titled album to pull from – “Abducted”, “Know What I Mean” and the summery “Go Outside” which always makes me want to go roll down a grassy hill in the sunshine.

The New York band’s sound has matured so much since they first hit the indie scene a couple years ago and their live performances are solidifying. To add to their indie cred, Bethany Cosentino from Best Coast joined Cults’ Madeline Follin on stage for the final song of the night, “Oh My God.”
