Congrats Dublab on 10 Wonderful Years
By Ryan - Thursday September 24th 2009

dublab_10Believe it: Dublab has been webcasting quality programming, throwing killer events and spinning wax all over town for ten years now. Big thanks to the entire crew for keeping things beyond bearable here in Los Angeles during that time.

To celebrate this watershed moment, the group is hosting ten glorious back-to-back anniversary events all over town over the course of ten days, beginning October 1. Said events include art shows, DJ nights, screenings, and special broadcasts. (By contrast, when Losanjealous turned four last spring, we ate a bowl of stale pretzels and read Victor’s post out loud in the Sandalwood conference room of the Marina del Rey Courtyard Marriott.) The full 10-day Dublab anniversary schedule is over on their their site and the final event threatens to be huge:

zz_parisHEADS UP
ZZ Top @ House of Blues Anaheim Thu Aug 20
ZZ Top @ House of Blues Sunset Strip Fri Aug 21 (both on sale tomorrow)

The bearded blues-and-legs impresarios that comprise ZZ Top, in light of the now-cancelled-due-to-Steven-Tyler’s-Sturgis-stage-mishap Aerosmith/ZZ Top tour, are officially mounting their own (smaller) headlining tour, post-haste:

“We, like so many fans, are disappointed that we’re not going to be out with Aerosmith and we wish Steven a speedy recovery,” said ZZ Top’s Dusty Hill.

ZZ’s Billy Gibbons chimed in, “As musicians, we sometimes have to improvise and that’s exactly what this tour is about. We’re going to get out there as quickly as possible and to play for people who want to come to a ‘down ‘n’ dirty’ rock and roll show – no frills and no holds bared.”

“When we found out that the tour was going to be cancelled, we got together and decided that since we’re ready, willing and able, we should get out there immediately and get it on and that’s exactly what we intend to do,” said Frank Beard of the decision to move on.

New ZZ Top dates, informally known within the band’s inner circle as the “Necessity-Is-A-Mother Tour,” will be posted on zztop.com as they are confirmed. (Paris image via zztop.com)

Inara George Brings Vocal Talent to Dengue Disco
By Ryan - Tuesday June 30th 2009

dengue_discoNow Hear This: Dengue Fever, arguably Losanjealous’ perennial favorite Los Angeles/Long Beach-based ’60s Cambodian Khmer pop group named after a debilitating disease, will be releasing a four-track EP entitled Radio Dance Floor, July 14. Said cassingle digi-EP (cover pictured at right, though, since it’s a digi-only-EP, much as we all surely enjoy staring at Chhom’s mug, cover art seems a bit superfluous in this instance, not unlike a few of the extraneous commas, words, and clauses in this sentence). Anyhow, the lead-in track features another Losanjealous fave, Bird and the Bee’s Inara George (have you downloaded her free tune courtesy Losanjealous and Limewire yet? Hmm?) on lead vocals, singing the disco classic “I Feel Love.” Stream it now:

Windows | Mac

Fun stuff. Now I get to hit the (digi) decks and switch between Donna Summer, Jimmy Somerville and Inara, seamlessly, while all the booties in the house are shaking madly.

“I Feel Love (Radio Edit)” 3:34
“Clipped Wings Secret Circuit’s Cosmic Clip Mixx” (Full Length)” 8:25

GRAMMY Museum Extends MJ Wardrobe Exhibit Downtown
By Ryan - Friday June 26th 2009

histyleFor those interested in further celebrating MJ’s legacy, this one came in late last night:

In light of today’s events and in celebration of the life and work of Michael Jackson, The GRAMMY Museum has extended and repurposed the exhibit, Michael Jackson: HIStyle. Starting Friday 6/26, a collection of Jackson’s most iconic wardrobe pieces (including the suit he wore on the cover of the Thriller album) will be exhibited on the Museum’s third floor alongside video of some of his most exciting GRAMMY performances. This will all open to the public at 11:30am.

The Museum regrets having to e-mail under such unfortunate circumstances, but we hope this exhibit will serve as a fitting tribute to one of the most significant entertainers in music history.

More from the site:

Highlights include jackets worn on the Victory tour, at Jackson’s 1984 American Music Awards appearance, and at the dedication of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. All are elaborately bejeweled, beaded, and detailed – with one piece weighing nearly fifteen pounds. (source)

Last Minute Ticket Giveaway: Pronto (Wilco + Cat Power) & Nels Cline @ The Mint This Saturday (5/16)
By Ryan - Wednesday May 13th 2009

HEADS UP
Pronto + Nels Cline @ The Mint Sat 5/16

This one’s been on the calendar for a while; we are all big fans of Nels and anything Wilco-tangential. First two emails right here win tix to this great show Saturday at the Mint. Need your first and last name. Good luck! UPDATE: We have our winners. Tickets still available at present right here. Good luck!

When not playing in his full-time gig with Wilco, New Jersey native-via-Chicagoan-via-Brooklynite Mikael Jorgensen crafts pitch-perfect pop songs under the moniker of Pronto.
Pronto now consists of Mikael Jorgensen (Wilco), Greg O’Keeffe, Erik Paparazzi (Cat Power), and Tunde Oyewole (Childballads). When their respective musical duties don’t take them elsewhere, Pronto plans to play in support of All Is Golden throughout 2009, its Contraphonic debut. All Is Golden is a 70’s-inspired tome that serves as a record of action. It is the sound of waking up and moving on, cross-country trips to California, black days and blue nights giving way to better times and warmer promises.

NELS CLINE is a genre-transcending guitar hero who has worked with an impossibly wide range of artists, including Bill Frisell, Sonic Youth’s anti-rock icons Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, and country-punk-poets the Geraldine Fibbers. Cline’s solo work is equally varied-from the lovely acoustic adventures of 2000’s The Inkling to his daring interpretation of John Coltrane’s Interstellar Space to his consistently provocative instrumental soundscaping with the Nels Cline Singers. In addition to his gig with Wilco, Kotche has played with Loose Fur (featuring Jeff Tweedy and Jim O’Rourke), and On Fillmore, an experimental jazz duo with bassist Darin Gray.
Awards include:California Music Award for “Outstanding Jazz Artist” & LA Weekly Music Awards for “Best New Genre/Uncategorizable Artist.”

Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize” To Become Official Rock Song of Oklahoma In Less Than Two Minutes
By Ryan - Tuesday April 28th 2009

The Flaming Lips Poolside @ The Palms Hotel And Casino, Las Vegas, NV

As an Oklahoma transplant here in Los Angeles last fall I took it upon myself to instigate what may, with hindsight, ultimately be considered a brutal email harrassment campaign of my friends and family from Oklahoma — those who grew up there, and those that live there still — urging them to vote for their favorite State Rock Song in an online poll. (“Vote Alice in Chains! Vote ‘Cocaine’ by Clapton, that one really screams Oklahoma! – ohshitnowaitjesus vote Jackson Browne! … ” etc ad infinitum) Following said inbox pummelling, the Flaming Lips eventually and somewhat predictably appeared victorious in the poll, their nominated 2002 hit “Do You Realize” now slated to become the first and possibly only official state rock song of Oklahoma. All ten finalists sans Jackson Browne can be found here. Where was I going with this? Oh, right:

Fuck Yeah Motherfuckers Oklahoma Has A State Rock Song. One Rodgers-and-Hammerstein-penned state song in this day and age simply doesn’t cut it. Call me selfish, but as a former resident I’d also like to see a State Country Song, State Punk Song, State Movie, State ABC Television Series, State Fast Food Chain (obvs Sonic [nasdaq: SONC]), State Domesticated Housepet, State OU-Fan-Driving-A-White-Dualie, and State Gravy. Hell, why not.

Outside Lands Returns to Golden Gate Park: 2009 Dates Announced
By Ryan - Tuesday March 03rd 2009

rons-favorite.jpgOutside Lands shall return to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park for a second year, August 28-30, 2009. Last year’s inaugural headliners included Radiohead, Jack Johnson and Tom Petty. (N/B: Writing those words just reminded me of Sunday’s lunch, dammit: I bet Jack Johnson knows which Surfer Taco to order. Maybe even shows up with his own sauce and escabeche in tow.)

Interestingly enough, if we are to take the below press release at face value Stereogum may be “road-tripping” to the festival this year. Sort of a long drive from New York if you ask me, but I say bring it, guys! See you up there (I’m flying Virgin with a cocktail in hand).

As always, keep your eyes tuned to the site for your ticket on-sale info. Photos from last year’s festival may be found here.
