PICK OF THE WEEK: The Mountain Goats Code

mountain goats john darnielleMountain Goats secret show this Saturday. Here are some clues to the show’s location from mountain-goats.com:

  • The room in which it’s taking place is very small
  • It’s in southern California in a place that’s kinda crucial to John Darnielle’s personal history
  • Head inland from the ocean

This rules out the Coliseum, Oki-Dog and the Pacific Ocean, but the Travelodge on Holt Boulevard between Gary and White remains a possibility. John goes on to warn, “if you figure it out and go blabbin’ about it to everybody the show probably won’t be able to happen so be discreet please i.e. keep your sleuthing private and your humble host who sees in secret will surely reward you, see you there.” Do it Rockapella!

Thanks Ron! Any word yet on the mystery special guest at Spaceland on December 10th? Tickets go on sale Wednesday and I’m guessing it’s a band from a certain big rock station so that’s why it’s on the hush tip. Thanks for the tip on the Sounds show!

  3. j : 11/27/06 at 1:54 pm

Heads up for anyone confused - The Watson Twins show at the Getty was cancelled and moved to February 2, 2007.

  4. Ron : 11/27/06 at 2:08 pm

Oscar–we’ll probably know by Tuesday night. I’m out of town so if anyone figures it out please post it here.

J–thanks for the info. The new date is on the list.

  5. Oscar : 11/27/06 at 3:58 pm

Word up my friend. I’ll get Scooby and the gang on it and see if I can get it up here before Wednesday. Thanks!

  6. Jenn : 11/27/06 at 6:10 pm

Just got word, the “Gimme Shelter Benefit” by KCRW no longer has Cold War Kids on their lineup (Starsailor is the replacement) as they received notification last week that the band couldn’t make it for this show.

  7. Ron : 11/27/06 at 6:15 pm

    Thanks Jenn!

  8. Andrew : 11/27/06 at 6:24 pm

Aaaah! I NEED to know where this Mountain Goats show is!!!

  9. Ron : 11/27/06 at 6:47 pm

The truth is out there, Andrew. Follow the clues.

  10. nickn : 11/27/06 at 11:08 pm

Garden Grove! Claremont! Am I close?

  11. Mimi : 11/27/06 at 11:10 pm

actually, Jenny Lewis at the Jimmy Kimmel show has been changed from Weds to Thurs night instead.

  12. Ron : 11/27/06 at 11:49 pm

Thanks Mimi–great tips all around this week.

  13. Jenn : 11/28/06 at 2:59 pm

So far Bloodcat Love’s been listed on Spaceland’s 12/10 line-up.

  14. Ron : 11/28/06 at 3:00 pm

    JET… hmm… pass.

  15. Ryan : 11/28/06 at 3:14 pm

come on. you love that song. i heard you humming it in the downstairs conference room the other day. Hey! Roll over DJ! Le blah blah blah, la blah-diddl-dee…

  16. Oscar : 11/28/06 at 3:18 pm

Yeah, I just got the e-mail about Jet being the band. Oh well. All that “surprise” band thing for Jet.

  17. Jenn : 11/28/06 at 3:42 pm

Lily Allen’s doing Jimmy Kimmel on the 5th, so there’s hope in her doing some shows (in addition to Wreck The Halls) around that time as well.

  18. V. : 11/28/06 at 4:25 pm

Hey, I LOVE JET! That was me you heard. In the 3rd floor small kitchen making my tea.

I wouldn’t call it humming, but air guitaring with added mouth noises. It’s more like BWRAWNT RAWNT RAWNT CHIKKA BRWRAWNT RAWNT RAWNT.

And have LaVerne order me some more green tea. TAZO this time, not that STASH shit.

  19. Frank L. : 11/28/06 at 4:29 pm

Why listen to Jet when you could listen to Iggy Pop. Jet rips off so many bands! AHhhhhh

  20. Andrew : 11/28/06 at 6:06 pm

:( After an hour of scouring google these clues tell me nothing! If anyone wants to be a good person could you email me the location of the mountain goats show?? andrewteix@gmail.com

  21. Ron : 11/28/06 at 9:50 pm

Thanks again, Jenn. Andrew, are you even trying?

  22. Andrew : 11/29/06 at 12:39 am

    :’(

  23. Jeanne : 11/29/06 at 10:38 am

Don’t feel bad, Andrew. I’ve been scouring the net for days. AND calling places, but I still can’t figure out where the Mountain Goats show is for sure. So if anyone would be a dear and possibly help me out a little on the location? My email is daydrmbelievr80@gmail.com

I’ll give you a cookie, and my eternal gratitude.

  24. Andrew : 11/29/06 at 1:03 pm

Yeah ive called all of the places in the socal area that he played when he first started and most aren’t even there anymore!

  25. Cate : 11/29/06 at 3:00 pm

I’d love the Mountain Goats info too if anyone is sharing…

    nhinla@yahoo.com

  26. anon : 11/29/06 at 3:32 pm

    Black watch pub Claremont

  27. Jeanne : 11/29/06 at 3:42 pm

I’ve already checked the Black Watch. They said some band named DCR Willie is playing Saturday night.

  28. Andrew : 11/29/06 at 5:22 pm

    So I guess it’s safe to assume that it’s 21+ eh?…. :(

  29. Craig : 11/29/06 at 11:26 pm

I’d look here for humble beginnings: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mountain_Goats

and listen to “This Year” for a hint about the area…

Oh, and because of it’s location, I’m assuming it can’t possibly be 21+, wouldn’t be logical.

  30. Tina : 11/30/06 at 2:04 pm

what day is the Mountain Gotas show?

  31. Ron : 11/30/06 at 3:38 pm

    Nice clues, Craig.

    Andrew–you got it now?

    Tina–scroll up.

  32. Andrew : 11/30/06 at 6:30 pm

I think I got it! Buuuut when I called they said there will be jazz tonight reggae tomorrow and punk on saturday… I’d be making a 2 hr trek to get there so I don’t know if I should take the chance…. or should i…?

  33. Craig : 11/30/06 at 6:40 pm

well, depends on if the place you’re thinking is the right place. there is music the next few nights, or so i think i’ve heard about…

  34. Ryan : 11/30/06 at 7:13 pm

It’s at the Days Inn Riverside, isn’t it.

  35. Jeff : 11/30/06 at 7:47 pm

Stephen Malkmus tix went on sale today for the Sat., Jan. 6th El Rey show. That is, of course, only if you have one of those black Amex cards.

Reguluh Internet presale this saturday at 10am pst.

  36. Mari : 11/30/06 at 11:13 pm

I’ve been searching all over and these clues have been quite helpful. Now Andrew, I know where you have in mind, but it just doesn’t seem like it would fit the bill. I just am not too familiar with the place where I think it probably is. Anyone have any more clues for me?

  37. Jenn : 12/1/06 at 1:14 pm

Are there any Franz Ferdinand fans here? Heads up: Nicholas McCarthy’s God Bearing Sisters will be performing at the Lightbox Gallery tomorrow, if the live music/art-combo at Matt Maust isn’t enough for you (although they’re both going on at the same time, I think; no time listed for CWK).

  38. HANK : 12/1/06 at 3:43 pm

    re: secret show location

did you check in your butt

  39. Oscar : 12/1/06 at 4:13 pm

Would the venue be on Santa Monica Blvd since you’re “starting from the ocean”? Just a thought.

  40. Mari : 12/1/06 at 4:15 pm

santa monica blvd doesn’t travel as far as the inland empire
i definitely have the city, general area narrowed down..it’s just between a few places now

  41. Frank L. : 12/1/06 at 4:48 pm

Try Lake Alice, Back to the Grind, OR Riverside Brewing Company, all in the city of Riverside

  42. Craig : 12/1/06 at 4:55 pm

    Cold, colder, coldest.

You’ve got a lot of “learning” to do… maybe you should look for a place to learn…

  43. Jay : 12/1/06 at 4:59 pm

I’ve heard they’ve played under fake names before, like a show at the Knitting Factory where they were listed as the Hospital Bombers til the last minute. I did a search on the band playing Black Watch Pub, and the first thing that came up referenced North Carolina’s governor. John lives in North Carolina. And I can’t find anything else that says DCR Willy even exists as a band.

  44. Mari : 12/1/06 at 5:00 pm

I think I got it, and well if I’m wrong then that’s that.

  45. Craig : 12/1/06 at 5:18 pm

It’s under the same name as always.

  46. anti-craig : 12/1/06 at 7:27 pm

man you are full of it.

  47. Craig : 12/1/06 at 9:16 pm

Oh how I wish I were. If only the posters that I’ve seen up around here didn’t say “The Mountain Goats”

  48. anti-craig : 12/1/06 at 9:27 pm

    up around where?

  49. anti-craig : 12/1/06 at 9:28 pm

ps also why would you wish that you were full of it man that doesn’t make sense and stands as further proof that you are full of it.

  50. anti-craig : 12/1/06 at 9:32 pm

full to the dang old gills.

  51. Craig : 12/2/06 at 3:26 am

around the venue, in this town, on this… campus

    I’m pretty sure I’d know

  52. Dong : 12/2/06 at 9:28 am

What about Claremont College. I think that’s IT!!!

  53. Ron : 12/2/06 at 4:46 pm

    Last clue for everyone:
sometimes you feel like a nut, SOMETIMES YOU DON’T.

    see you at 8

  54. tmg : 12/3/06 at 1:38 am

so where was the show and how was it?

  55. anon : 12/3/06 at 1:47 am

pitzer college in claremont and it was the greatest

  56. glass_slipper : 12/4/06 at 11:04 am

If anyone’s interested, this show is up on archive.org: http://www.archive.org/details/tmg2006-12-02

  57. [...] Well, probably my ultimate favorite was the Slayer Dumpster. I also enjoyed the Mountain Goats Secret Show Torture. And the Assholes Behind Jerry’s Deli was funny. I think most readers, though, would consider the Huell Howser drinking game the best. Mr. T Doll appearances are always great, and I liked the NYC/LA Comparative(ly Foolish) Study. Jeff [...]
