A Few Concert Reviews

By Ryan - Saturday December 02nd 2006

Begpardon. I’ve been lax in my concert reviews. Following are the reviews of six concerts I’ve attended since 29 Nov 2006 (three days ago) in no particular order. Deep down, though, you and I both know this is merely a transparent excuse to foist another questionably informative HTML table onto your eyes. Behold:

Concert Reviews For Period Spanning 29 Nov – 2 Dec 2006
Artist Venue Grade Notes
Danzig The Wiltern LG A- As much as I want to, I promised [redacted] that I would not compare Danzig to Gallagher based on age and male pattern baldness. So, for the record, I am definitely not comparing Danzig to Gallagher based on age and male pattern baldness. Highlights: (1) 500 people in black sweat-steamed tshirts all scream-singing incomprehensible lyrics about devils and what-have-you (2) Preshow fortification courtesy Frank and Hank’s (3) Honey-drizzled hotok courtesy Koo’s Trailer Grill. Lowlight: $22 for two beers at ridiculous Ktown watering hole

Artist Venue Grade Notes
The Sounds The Avalon KC B Holy crap-inski. I’d forgotten they were providing free alcohol at this show. I took [redacted], who was in town for an interview the following day. He proceeded to guzzle vodka after pure vodka. He may in fact have gone so far as to take one of the free bottles of vodka to the interview with him, pausing only to grab a handful of olives. As to The Sounds™, they were decent and, for the most part, entertaining. The accents were particularly decent.
Artist Venue Grade Notes
Blood Brothers The Fonda STG N/A Goddammit. I didn’t even get to see these guys. They were playing while The Sounds™ were playing. Why they even bothered to show up in this chart is beyond me.

Trail of Dead Fonda STG B Last time I saw these cats, to my knowledge, was SXSW 2003 @ Emo’s LG. They rocked pretty hard then. They seemed more theatrical this go-round, but then again they were definitely more polished and considerably more musically advanced than The Sounds™, which we had just left. Every time I looked at Conrad I couldn’t stop thinking about Taco Bell® thanks in no small part to that fool interview. As a result I would proceed to eat at Taco Bell the following day. Taco Bell, Oh my bittersweet tearjerking fancied holy shit-von-pants.

Loud-Ass R&B Car next to me, La Cienega at Olympic B+ Friday morning this dude was blaring something in his car loud as shit. I turned off my stereo to enjoy the vibe. It was a moment.

Myself on Walking Fretless West LA Lockout B- Occasionally I play in a jazz quartet, it sounds ridiculous to say it but it is true. We had a rehearsal early in the morning following all of the above shows. I was hungover and tired but we charged through three hours of standards in the big book before hitting up Langer’s. I give myself a B- for losing place a couple of times during the solos as well as missing a shitload of the changes in Dolphin Dance the first time through. Damn it.

One might think if you play jazz you might go hear some jazz once in a while. As I posted the other day, I’ve been looking for some good local jazz blogs.

Twenty-two bucks? Is Frank and Hank’s the ridiculous watering hole you’re referring to?

don’t kid yourself, ollie…$22 would get you VIP treatment @ frank and hank’s. for that kind of scratch you’d get top shelf bottle service and an open-ended jukebox/fritos tab.
