losanjealous benevolent societyThe Losanjealous Benevolent Society gathers a weekly list of strange happenings and fun events in LA. Visit our events calendar for the full list. And if you’re organizing or know of an event you think belongs on the list, send us info at tips@losanjealous.com.

FRIDAY

Chuck Hodi @ Hyaena Gallery
Portraits of people made famous by wicked deeds. Chuck Hodi is a disturbingly dark and visceral artist with an eye for serial killers and evil. The gallery also features authentic serial killer artwork and true crime artifacts. Through Wed 2/28.

Bathroom Follies @ Highways Performance Space
Project Runway designer and choreographer collaborate on dance presentation about public restroom life. Fri and Sat, 8:30 pm. 1651 18th St., Santa Monica 90404. Through Sat 2/17.

Drawing Hour @ Getty

OrcCon 2007
The widest array of family, historical, fantasy, and science fiction board, card, computer, miniatures, and roleplaying games. Through Mon 2/19.

Says You! @ Skirball Cultural Center
That smug MPR wordplay game show. Delightful. Through Sat 2/17.

The Vy-Tech Nutritionals Iron Man Fit Expo Presented by BodyBuilding.com and Gaspari Nutrition @ Pasadena Civic Center
California’s Once a Year Fitness Event. Women’s Figure Competition. Meet the new Mr. Olympia, JAY CUTLER in person! Learn to fight ULTIMATELY in Mixed Martial Arts demonstrations and classes. Through Sun 2/18.

SATURDAY

FireWorks @ Robert Berman Gallery
Multi-dimensional installation derived from the remains from the artist’s Santa Monica Studio fire in December of 2006. The show will feature an inspired selection and survey of surviving works from over 500 collected paintings, drawings, collages on wood, texts and photographs that were in the studio during the fire.

Free to a Good Home @ GR2
A group show at GR2 that will benefit Kitten Rescue, a Los Angeles-based organization that saves kittens and cats from the high-kill shelter system and fosters them until they can find the right homes. Paintings, illustrations, photography, and other pieces will be inspired by-but not limited to-cats. Through Wed 3/14.

Hekla Dogg Jonsdottir @ Machine Project
Famed Iceland artist Hekla Dogg Jonsdottir past projects include cold cathode ray tube fireworks, a frozen puddle in the middle of the summer, and pop-up igloos. Ms. Jonsdottir’s installation at Machine Project will be a surprise to all and sundry. Through Sun 3/4.

World Chili Cheese Fries Eating Championship
The nation’s top competitive eaters will converge at the historic Queen Mary for the Queen Mary World Chili Cheese Fries Eating Championship. Many fans remember last year, when Sonya Thomas edged out Joey Chestnut by just one ounce. Chestnut will no doubt want another chance at this weighty title and the generous purse offered by the Queen Mary.

SUNDAY

Ambient Haircut @ Betalevel
Last month, we tried having Ambient Haircut on the westside at the ArtLA fair. We were cutting hair, droning away… and as Warren Beatty walked by, he gave us a deeply puzzled look. Don’t you want to be in the kind of situation where if Warren Beatty were to walk by, he would give *you* a puzzled look?

Maker Faire Auditions @ Machine Project
Tryouts for MAKE Magazine’s Maker Faire will be held at Machine from 1-4pm on Sunday, February 18th. It’s like Dorkbot, but with a history of electric giraffes.

Origins of the Rainbow: Blue @ Machine Project
Through eight monthly installments, ing will reveal the origins the rainbow through an original creation myth. We respectfully request that viewers wear the specific color of the month. All color coded guests will receive a special prize that will be used during the eighth show.

MONDAY

David Mamet and Howard Norman @ Dutton’s
Noted authors David Mamet and Howard Norman come to Dutton’s Brentwood to sign their most recent works: Bambi vs. Godzilla and Devotion, respectively.

Harlem Globetrotters @ Staples Center
Legends of the court who have never lost a game. Curiously, the “Globetrotters” are also appearing in New Jersey the same day, so hopefully we don’t get stuck with the “B” team out west. Watch for that one move where it looks like he’s going to shoot the ball, but doesn’t.

TUESDAY

Rafe Esquith @ Central Library
In a L.A. neighborhood plagued by guns, gangs, and drugs, there is an exceptional classroom known as Room 56. Esquith reveals the techniques that have made him one of the most acclaimed educators of our time. Special Performance by the Hobart Shakespeareans.

ONGOING

Performance @ Drkrm
Prints by Master printer John Matkowsky made from negatives of Cecil Beaton’s exotic vision of rock icon Mick Jagger as part of an exhibition of the works of Donald Cammel and Nicholas Roeg showcasing two seminal works of motion picture history, Performance and The Man Who Fell To Earth. Ends 2/24.

The Burning House @ New Image Art Gallery
Faile, Swoon and David Ellis all take their cue from the street. Well renowned individually, their show “The Burning House” will provide a high concentration of talent in collaborations as well as individual works on display. Ends 2/24.

Matthew Pillsbury: Screen Lives @ M+B Gallery
Long exposure black and white photographs of people watching television and working at their computer. Far more interesting than it sounds. Ends 2/24.
