Alice Coltrane Tribute Tonight @ JANM
Attention, fans of Alice Coltrane and/or outdoor summer boozing events: This evening the Japanese American National Museum is hosting For Alice with Love: Celebrating the Music of Alice Coltrane . . .
The Coltrane name is synonymous with deeply creative, passion-filled modern music. This special evening is a tribute to the legacy of the family matriarch, the late Alice Coltrane (1937-2007), whose approach to the piano was nothing short of genius. Performers include her beloved Ashram Community Choir and The Universal Consciousness Orchestra featuring vocalist Dwight Trible. The concert will also include a set by Mrs. Coltrane’s talented nephew Flying Lotus. Guest Curator: Carlos Nino, Host, KPFK’s Spaceways Radio. FREE!
One quote (which I am bound to get wrong) always comes to mind when I think about Alice Coltrane in relation to John, both of them being the musicians they were. Early in her career he said something along the lines of “You have all those keys, Alice. Why aren’t you playing all of them?”
Suffice it say she took his advice to heart. (Anybody out there has the time to find this quote online please feel free to chime in…) See you out there tonight.
