“Wyld Stallyons” @ Spaceland, March 18: The Speculation Grows

Following our post Thursday afternoon (thanks for the tip DJ Budgie), ‘Crowes and Coachella message boards have lit up like so many blue-tinselled Spacelandian curtains as to which damn band will be gracing the establishment’s venerable, albeit quaint, stage come March 18.

The question is now begged.

Which band do we think Spaceland's (and KROQ's) "Wyld Stallyons" bill is a euphemism for?

    Is the question begged? To “beg the question”, sadly is a phrase which doesn’t actually mean what it sounds like, which is to “raise the question.” And while in many cases it’s tempting to just use a non-standard phrasing because it’s simple and it works, the original meaning of “beg the question” is worth keeping around. (Does it really matter whether “comprise” means “constitute” or “include”? Probably not.)

    In logic and rhetoric, to “beg the question” is to assume your conclusion in your premises. An example via begthequestion.info:

    A simple example would be “I think he is unattractive because he is ugly.” The adjective “ugly” does not explain why the subject is “unattractive” — they virtually amount to the same subjective meaning, and the proof is merely a restatement of the premise. The sentence has begged the question.

    Of course, there are much more pernicious uses of question-begging arguments. Arresting suspects in the War on Terror not because there is evidence of their misdeeds but because if they did something bad, it could hurt a lot of people, is a sad and relevant example.
