Earthquake, May 17, 839pm: 5.0 (10-15 second shaker)

By Ryan - Sunday May 17th 2009

quake_5Please tell me you felt that one. Lucky me! It struck just as I was perched atop a rolling chair, tearing down blue painting tape from the ceiling trim in the Sandalwood conference room, juggling pilsner all the while. Fun times in the Marina del Rey Courtyard Marriott. Apparently the epicenter was in Lenawthorgundowood. Still waiting for the breakdown from Kate Hutton; meantime, how’d that one treat you? Aftershock reached 3.1.

UPDATE: Magnitude downgraded to 4.7.

that was a long rolling ride down here in the south bay. As in stuff falling off shelves, floors moving out from under your feet kind of fun. Haven’t felt anything like that since I moved out of San Fran…. Guess I know why the dog was all antsy….

I totally felt it in North Manhattan Beach – insanity. The cats did not go crazy, which I was honestly very surprised at.
Some stuff fell over, but nothing broken – PHEW!!

Last night, just minutes before the quake, I was lying awake in bed and just as I was about to fall asleep for the night, BOOM! My apartment was shaking and it was a good one! I just sat there on the bed and waited it out. Then when it stopped, the first thing I did was to go look for my small transitor radio and when I couldn’t find it, I immediately turned on the TV. I switched to the regular channels, but none of them apparently had received the report of having an earthquake so I turned off the TV. Then I went to call my family members to see if they’re okay and they were. They felt it too. But let me tell you, that was one hard shaker man!

When the quake struck, I was playing video games on my computer. It was a soft little roll in El Sereno (Huntington Drive on boarder of Alhambra towards LA). It was small, but I was thinking, “I’m not the one who is shaking! I took my medication this morning!” So I just sat there waiting for it to end, to make sure it was an earthquake and not the guy upstairs who is always stomping on the floor, but no sound from him. Honestly, sometimes, I have actually predicted a quake if I watch a certain movie, and then within 24 hours afterwards there is a local quake that I can feel, but none have been major quakes from that set of predictions – that have actually occured 10 times so far since 1991. Something just drives me to watch the movie, and when I do, a quake happens within 24 hours. It has worked in live air tv showings too, but within 24 hours after the quake. I predicted the Northridge quake from a dream about an earthquake that I had the morning it happened. I woke up, and talked about the terrifying dream on audio tape, and then the quake struck as I was talking about the dream! Freaky ability, but I swear it’s true! But I didn’t predict this one. See, it works sometimes, but not all the time. That’s the problem. One cannot accurately predict earthquakes.

I live in San Diego and felt it in my 3rd floor apartment. No one on the ground felt it.

I was with my sister on the phone, she was on vacations in Kona and she told me she was going to hung up because the earthquake was starting, she called me back 30 mins after and everything was fine, she was very lucky to stay on a very secure place like the Kona Coast resort.

Felt it here in the base of the Hollywood Hills but it was weak-ass. You can do better than that, nature. Bring it on!!!
