Losanjealous Concert Picks: February 19-25

By Victor - Monday February 19th 2007

PICK OF THE WEEK

Mia Doi ToddMia Doi Todd @ The Smell
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares and go Downtown where all the lights are… well, not so bright. At least not around the Downtown alley where The Smell is. But you can still forget your troubles and cares minus the bright lights. Intimate venue + Mia’s intimate songs = perfect match.

    Oooohhh…
    Oscar is in the know!!!

    Anytime Shenny!

  9. Jeff : 2/20/07 at 2:31 pm

Thanks for the Stooges and Police tips, guys.

And welcome to the age of a dozen pre-sales. 3 of which will be KROQ codes that don’t work.

Also, why aren’t the Police playing two nights at the Bowl? Anyone seen a show at Dodger Stadium that sounded OK?

  10. Oscar : 2/20/07 at 3:06 pm

The sound isn’t bad at Dodgers Stadium. The bad part is if you sit in the actual Dodgers Stadium seats VS the ones on the field, you’re pretty far out. If you do get Dodger Stadium seats, try to get corner seats. Plus, you’ll get a better chance of getting tickets at Dodgers Stadium VS the Hollywood Bowl. If it was good enough for The Beatles, I’m sure Dodger Stadium is good enough for The Police.

  11. Oscar : 2/20/07 at 3:23 pm

You know it Frank! Also for those that want tickets for Arcade Fire in San Diego, tickets go on sale this Saturday, the same day they’re on SNL. For the more adventurous ones willing to go to Berkeley, those tickets go on sale March 4th.

  12. Oscar : 2/20/07 at 3:51 pm

Sloan is playing May 1st @ The Troubadour. Tickets go on sale this Thursday.

  13. shenny : 2/20/07 at 8:42 pm

Foo Fighters opening up for The Police @ Dodger Stadium
    http://www.foofighters.com/news.php

  14. Jeff : 2/21/07 at 9:30 am

Well…now that VH apparently will not be touring this summer, (can’t imagine why) I’m considered the Police show despite the presence of the saccharine Afterschool Special Foo Fighters. As long as Copeland promises to write a nasty message to Sting across his toms.

  15. Oscar : 2/21/07 at 10:36 am

Lily Allen is playing the House of Blues San Diego March 30. Also, The Decemberists will be playing with the L.A. Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl July 7th. Also on the same bill, Band of Horses. Neko Case will also play the Hollywood Bowl November 16th.

  16. Jenn : 2/21/07 at 12:08 pm

March 21st, James Morrison @ The Roxy

  17. fa : 2/21/07 at 4:13 pm

  18. Oscar : 2/21/07 at 5:02 pm

This Thursday @ 7pm: Free “Secret” Cold War Kids Show @ a secret warehouse at 1530 Ivar, Hollywood, CA 90028. Diamond Nights & Clipse will also perform. Enjoy =)

  19. Oren : 2/21/07 at 9:28 pm

Oscar - you sure about the 7pm time on the secret Cold War Kids show? I’ve seen both 7pm and 10pm listed as “doors” time.

  20. Jenn : 2/21/07 at 10:14 pm

The doors open 7:30pm for their Troubadour show (where I’ll be at — the sucker that I am, paying to see CWK live). So it must be 10pm doors for this “secret” show… with a performance time of midnight, I’m guessing.

  21. Oscar : 2/22/07 at 9:47 am

The show for the posters starts at 7pm, performances start at 10pm.

  22. Ron : 2/22/07 at 10:52 am

Earlimart @ Getty rsvp is open now
    http://getty.edu/visit/calendar/events/Performances.html

  23. Oren : 2/22/07 at 11:27 am

    Thanks, y’all.

  24. Jenn : 2/22/07 at 1:18 pm

The March 3 Rachel Fuller show currently listed under Hotel Cafe — she’s given the line-up from her blog:

    TENACIOUS D (jack Black)
    BEN HARPER
    JOE PURDY

  25. Oscar : 2/22/07 at 7:58 pm

There’’s a charity concert in Long Beach w/ The Bravery. For tickets, click here: http://www.wavesoundtickets.com/pop/

  26. Tina : 2/22/07 at 8:39 pm

    Thanks Jenn!

June 9 John Mayer @ hollywood Bowl

July 18 & 19 The Fray, Eisley, Gomes @ greek Theatre

  27. Tina : 2/22/07 at 8:40 pm

    I meant Gomez

  28. fa : 2/23/07 at 12:49 am

I think that’s a crappy bill for Gomez. I saw them yesterday at the Wiltern and it was fun. Anyone catch them at hotel cafe tonight?

  29. Oren : 2/23/07 at 10:38 am

They were fine form at Hotel.

  30. Oscar : 2/23/07 at 12:24 pm

Wow, those Police after market prices are out of control! That’s just from the dang pre-sale! I’ll just park behind the Pavilion the day of the show. It will be a lot closer than where those $400 field seats are.

  31. frank : 2/23/07 at 1:05 pm

    Lupe Fiasco
    Moving Units
    Frankie Chan (Dj set)
Adam 12 of she Wants Revenge (Dj set)

  32. V. : 2/23/07 at 1:23 pm

This Police stuff is spinning out of control. They had a handful of great songs but the reunion hype is not nearly in proportion to their actual legacy. (Watch the same hysteria ensue when the truly mediocre Genesis come back later this year.) All you had to do was see Sting on the Grammys in his stupid leather vest, making up some new lower octave middle to “Roxanne” to see the where this reunion show is headed.

Interesting idea though, Oscar. No way can they check tickets when you buy parking, so you should be able to drive up and hang out at the bullpen gate and hear everything loud and clear.

  33. anon : 2/23/07 at 3:23 pm

    Peter Gabriel > Genesis

  34. Ron : 2/23/07 at 3:44 pm

Don’t get Ryan started on Genesis

  35. Ryan : 2/23/07 at 4:15 pm

If Genesis were to reform, announce tour, book Dodger Stadium and promise that all three of them would be wearing Haggar wrinkle-free slacks braided belts and Knights of the Round Table polo shirts…..no price too high. I’d sell my kids. Those guys are consummate performers. You know Sting’s not going to be caught dead in a Knights of the Round Table polo but I have a very solid feeling Collins already has at least one of the shirts, in heavy rotation, day-to-day.

    It’s Driving me Mad
Just Another Way of Passing the Day
    I Could Show you
    I Could Show you
Some of the people in my life

  36. Oscar : 2/23/07 at 4:23 pm

Who would open for Genesis? The Police have the Foo. I’m guessing Nickleback will be the undercard for the Genesis reunion.

  37. Ryan : 2/23/07 at 4:36 pm

Phil Collins could open for Genesis, performing solo material. Much like flaming lips opening for and then playing with beck. Similar concept. Or maybe the Lips would back them - I actually wouldn’t rule this out.

  38. Oscar : 2/23/07 at 4:36 pm

Also Mars Volta March 28. On Sale 3/03. The pre-sale for Berkeley & L.A. are sold out. Tickets for those shows go on sale tomorrow at 10am. Good luck!

  39. Tron : 2/23/07 at 4:46 pm

I was actually thinking about the Lips before reading your comment. Just don’t let Wayne record the show for a DVD release.

  40. Tron : 2/23/07 at 4:48 pm

Jill Scott? Sade? ELO? Air Supply?

  41. V. : 2/23/07 at 4:59 pm

Four words: Mike + The Mechanics

Actually, 3 words and one mathematic symbol.

  42. Tron : 2/23/07 at 5:09 pm

Maybe, under the condition that they are NOT to play ‘The Living Years.’

  43. Oscar : 2/23/07 at 5:17 pm

Maybe Creed can get back together and open for Genesis. How about them apples?

  44. Ryan : 2/23/07 at 5:24 pm

M+TM crossed my mind as well. Tron: Living Years is their theme song, man - there is no way they’re not going to play that. Mike will be wearing a yellow Knights of the Round Table polo. A giant fan will be making his hair blow in the breeze. Likely they will bring Phil out on stage early for this song, and then all clomp back out on stage again for the Genesis portion.

    Consummate.

Actually though, I was pondering if Wang/Chung is too pigeonholed to be an opener for this. Recently caught To Live and Die in LA on cable and I gotta say that WangChung soundtrack was solid (for a period piece). Maybe Shadoe Stevens can be the Master of Ceremonies.

  45. Tron : 2/23/07 at 5:50 pm

Oohhh…maybe he will do a reading from his latest children’s book.

  46. Anonymous : 2/24/07 at 10:53 am

You all heard about Fiona Apple doing two benefit nights at Largo, on 3/5 and 3/9? It’s pricey — $75, plus the annoying $15 food minimum — but it’ll probably be pretty great too.

  47. Oscar : 2/26/07 at 10:01 am

Looks like Coachella isn’t the only show Rage Against The Machine is doing. They’re playing with Wu-Tang @ Rock The Bells! http://www.rockthebells.net/

  48. Jeff : 2/26/07 at 2:10 pm

Does this qualify as a reunion? Cuz I thought the Nightwatchman had said it was definitely NOT a reunion.

I can just imagine the last Audioslave rehearsal….

Cornell (perfect faux hawk): “No, I’m not gonna wear that Che shirt, Tom. Step off. I perform shirtless anyway.”

Morello: “You’re just not revolutionary enough, bro. Stop fixing your hair. …Thayil was always way cooler than you anyway.”

Tim Bob: “Hey check out my new tattoo, Chris.”

Cornell: “Oh, wow. What’s that…Chinese? What’s it mean?”

Tim Bob: “Time to reform Soundgarden. BRO.”

  49. Oscar : 2/26/07 at 2:42 pm

Probably not a reunion. It’s smart of them to add the new shows now that Coachella is sold out. It gives fans a chance that were priced out of Coachella to see Rage Against The Machine and maybe lower scalper prices for 3 day passes (Which is probably the reason Coachella scalper prices are out of control).
