    Being the son of a Gainesville native and having made many a visit to the city and its surroundings as a lad, I can state with some certainty that calling it “East Coast” is a pretty dubious misnomer. It may apply in the broadest geographic sense–note, though, that Gainesville is well inland from both of Florida’s coasts and actually has hills–but culturally it is the southernmost bulwark of the Deepest South.

    Or, as Baltimore native Cex memorably put it, “Florida (Is Shaped Like a Big Droopy Dick for a Reason).”
