HEADS UP
Peter Gabriel @ Hollywood Bowl Fri 5/7
The ticket pre-sale for us special American Express cardholders and fan club members is live now.
Am I the only one a bit dubious Peter Gabriel can headline the Hollywood Bowl these days? I tend to think of him of having about the same waning popularity these days as, say, a Tears for Fears. And to further push it, he’s proudly advertised this show as “orchestra, no drums, no guitars.” Integrity for sure, but maybe not hardly strong selling points for casual fans. More power to him if he can fill it up. God knows I’d rather see him do well there instead of another damn Eagles show.

TFF bait taken. Let us now recall your recent bewilderment at James Taylor and Carole King’s ability to headline two nights at the bowl, and the fact that those two have now added a third night since your post. Clearly your speculations surrounding this venue and the acts it chooses to book are way, way off, seemingly across the board.
I’m looking forward to seeing Pete. I wouldn’t mind a drum or a guitar someplace, but I look forward to seeing how the Scratch My Back cover material translates (album drops Feb 15 on Virgin, BTW; in your haste to take the piss you forgot to mention this). I’ll check it out and probably come away very impressed. But that’s me, and I’m old. I accept this.
Peter Gabriel Fucking Rocks, He Can Do All!
The last tour was interesting. The song selection was lame and the last album sucked. I can’t wait to see Peter re-work his magic and give the people what they want. Peter classics!
I’m with Ryan here- pardon me, but if you lump Mr. Gabriel in with Tears for Fears, you are Fucking Retarded- send this post to the government and i’m sure you’ll get some kind of tax break set aside for people that occasionally forget how to breathe. having some fucking respect for and knowledge of and artist before you decide to post your silly little views on it. and while i’m handing out pointless internet rage- try again, Grahame- Up is a great album. sure there are a few silly tracks- (the first release, ‘Barry Williams Show’ is obvious) but it still contains the spirit of Bigtime or even Sledgehammer- all i’m saying is Peter Gabriel has not sat still like so many other musicians of his age and time- he’s evolved. and if you really give it a chance, you can see some of the beautiful things he has in him. i know this show is going to be amazing, and i’m really pissed that i’m not going- that might be where some of this lashing out is coming from- and for that, i apologize- but really- Fucking REALLY- tears for fears and Peter Gabriel- pull your head out of your ass so you can see what it is you’re typing, dude.
Mike, sorry you can’t make the show. I think the TFF example was used to compare popularity amongst the music going public and not musical integrity/talent/substance. That said I doubt TFF would take any offense with someone pointing out the simplicity of their music.
…s- yeah- i think you’re right- i was so quick to fly into a rage, that i missed that it wasn’t a musical comparison, but one based on popularity, as you said- bah- now is the moment where i realize i’m the guy screaming and cursing at strangers on the internet- sheesh- never a fun feeling. my apologies to all. i just have a strong love of everything mr. gabriel has done, even the early stuff when he first left Genesis-the stuff i don’t even listen to that much. it’s hard to stay cool and respectful (also intelligent) when someone seems to be saying ‘meh’ to an act that has really affected me. especially when i’m missing a one-time opportunity show like this.
oh well- thanks for setting me straight, …s- you are the good friend at a party that makes sure the drunk guy doesn’t do anything he’ll really Really regret in the morning. i appreciate it.
Appreciate the passion, Mike. S. has it right–I meant that it’s precisely because P.G. does his own unique thing artistically that I wondered if he could fill the Hollywood Bowl today; integrity does not always translate to popular sales.
However, he has exceed even his own modest expectations–after initially planning for a half-capacity Bowl configuration…

…$35 tickets have been opened up to as high as the U section and available as of now. Good for him.
Was an amazing show last night…
Too bad for those who didn’t get to see.
