An Afternoon At The Piñata District
By
Ryan - Monday May 12th 2008

OBJECTIVE
Purchase large piñata for upcoming birthday party
GEOGRAPHIC DIRECTIVE / MISSION-CRITICAL ADVICE
Purchase said piñata in piñata district loosely centered around Olympic and Central. Do not get sidetracked by fresh fruit, nuts, chapulines, unappetizingly-piled meters of donglike chorizo or, worst of all, the ever-popular taco truck cleverly buried within the piñata stalls
BUDGET
$12

El Bordello Alexandra Now Has A Centaur
By
Ryan - Monday April 07th 2008

I do not know when the Centaur first arrived in Venice Beach. I do know that He is there now, and He is on the rooftop. To be sure, we’ve a not inconsiderable number of large-scale additions newly assembled and clamoring for the unsuspecting pedestrian’s eyeball atop El Bordello Alexandra. Witness: an additional fleet of gargoyles (now with more evil!); a ridiculous-looking Neptune with a merman’s body, trident and two chained beasts approximating dolphins; a pair of uncomfortably large devils threatening to encroach on the neighbor’s roof, a few scattered knights-in-armor…they are all so much noise, for the life-sized*, heavily-armed, Son-of-God-faced and abs-of-bronze inclusive Centaur is the clearcut breadwinner, and at this point it is evident the owner is now merely trying to one-up himself, having laid to waste all external competition long ago. A daunting task, but I feel confident in saying the body of work at 20 Westminster is far from finished.

Gregory Peck Seen Defending Man With But One Good Hand, Glendale, 2/2/08

Still no word as to why Atticus sounds like a perfectly refined gentleman while his children come across as hillbillies.

Triforium! - A Senryū
By
Ryan - Wednesday January 16th 2008
Everybody’s favorite singing, blinking, Jetsons-era downtown public art installation deserves a tribute today. Yes? Yes! Please feel free to add your personal ode to Los Angeles’ very own Triforium in the comment section.

Triforium! - A Senryū
I play silly tunes
A homeless man defecates

Photo Op: Hillary Votes King Taco
By
Victor - Friday January 11th 2008

Crushing a taco at the Boyle Heights King Taco, Hillary erases any and all doubt that she’s one of the people. No word on whether the red salsa made her tear up.
Barack, the gauntlet’s been thrown down. When you swing through town, you better drop in on Cactus #1 or other Top 5 taco shack.

After the Rain: Highland Park
By
Ryan - Monday January 07th 2008

Few things made me giggle more last year than muffler-man-turned-chicken-headed monstrosity Chicken Boy’s re-introduction to the local landscape back in October [witness the head’s installation at LA Observed]. Following a discussion with Matt Maranian in 2006 I got in touch with owner Amy Inouye and was told this resurrection was in the works, but largely forgot about it. Suddenly one day last fall there he was, towering over Future Studio at 56th and Figueroa, glorious as the day he was born. Raise a glass to Amy’s tenacity this evening. [Chicken Boy: Official Site]

Christmas in Cozumel (Please Do Not Destroy Me)
By
Ryan - Thursday December 20th 2007

Directly beneath the clock tower in the town square of San Miguel de Cozumel, Mexico sits a large, hollow, artificial Christmas tree. Inside this tree, a pint-sized Santa Claus kindly requests that you do not destroy him. More holiday photos from south of the border TK, assuming I ever stop polling you about bathrooms and tacos.

Mid-City Tacky Tour 2007
By
Pete - Tuesday December 18th 2007
One of my family’s great Christmastime traditions is what we call “Tacky Patrol,” in which we hop in the car and drive around nearby neighborhoods looking for incredibly tacky displays of Christmas lights and decorations. Since we’re from Illinois, we’ve always enjoyed great success.
I’ve been in Los Angeles long enough that I figured it’s time to bring the tradition here. It’s a little trickier in inner-city Los Angeles than in the exurban fringes of Chicagoland: for one thing, the most elaborate displays here are actually pretty tasteful. I suspect that this is related to the proliferation of professional holiday decoration services, which are disheartening but unsurprising in a city where the gentry cannot so much as wipe their own asses without an immigrant laborer (armed with a green card purchased in MacArthur Park) handing them the toilet paper.
We begin our tour on Harvard Boulevard in lovely, historic West Adams. Why not?

The Westside Rentals Hearse: A Line-By-Line Study
By
Ryan - Thursday November 15th 2007

Of all the content on this website, few posts generate as many passionately eloquent arguments as the individual articles regarding Westside Rentals. Every renter in the city has formed a distinct opinion about the local rental behemoth and Losanjealous has, for better or worse, become the de facto dumping ground for said opinions. (”They’re useless!” “They’re the greatest!” “That last commenter was a plant from WSR!” “Stop calling me a plant because I am totally legit!” “Like hell you are!” And so forth.)
So be it, then. Today we look at one of the company’s nefarious advertising vessels: The Westside Rentals Hearse. Join us as we scrutinize the vehicle’s advertising messages, line-by-line, after the jump.
