How Would You Stay Awake During the Orb?
THE SETUP
On March 18 the LA Phil kicks off Minimalist Jukebox, a two-week music festival dedicated to the minimalist genre. Walt Disney Concert Hall is the setting for feature sets by Boom Bip, Dntel, and John Tejada while LA’s own dublab soundsystem provides the soundtrack between acts. The evening culminates with a live performance by The Orb.
THE QUESTION
The event runs from 11:59pm Saturday, March 18 to 6:00am Sunday, March 19. How would you stay awake for these six hours?

On my walk to the shiny happy Ghery building I’ll walk through skid row and pick up 4 crack rocks, one of which I’ll smoke out of a plastic straw on the way. I’ll take one of the rocks and kiester it, for the slow release action. The remaining two rocks I’ll wrap in mochi and swallow, which will take a couple of hours to dissolve. Then if I’m still alive at the intermission I’ll drink 7 cups of coffee and eat an entire bottle of extra strength excedrin (it has caffeine in it).
Alternately I may just sleep the whole day before the concert and then go right after I wake up… that may be a better idea, but probably wouldn’t be quite as fun.
simple enough…ecstasy and redbull. Lots of redbull.
The genius promoters putting this event together chose a saturday for good reason. It leaves you friday night to pull an all-nighter & sleep until 10pm saturday.
steal some of mom’s ritilin, crush it up in a pen cap and snort it during the upbeats, just like in high school, yo! if that proves to be too obvious, or mom won’t share, i’m thinking some proper booty-shakin/head-bobbing/body-grooving during the performance gets the blood going enough to last at least for most of the 6 hours (!!) – really, how often do you get to get yrr groove on in disney concert hall (not since ozomotli played, said i)?!?!?!
I’d hire a personal escort to accompany me, and to pull out an individual hair everytime I drifted off.

The same way I always stay awake: braiding hair, telling ghost stories, playing light as a feather stiff as a board, and calling cute boys but hanging up when they answer the phone
How to stay awake, hmmm
I will pass on the coke reference and instead say that with a big spooky building like that going up downtown, it needs a good ghost story to go with it, so I would spend the time between sets weaving spookly yarns for the kiddies with dialated pupils and start a legend that will hopefully last LA a good long time.
Coke is it
two words: mini thins. aka Trucker’s Speed, available over the counter.
As the official, unpaid Los Anjealous correspondent, I would dispatch 6 hourly reports from a portable communications device. Possibly topics themes: the upholstery in the hall, what’s up with that; the state of rave culture (probably merit a half a paragraph; hallucinations triggered by the giant organ.
Sankyo
Forget amphetamines – I would some sort of special medical device to forcibly hold my eyes open, drink lots of dihydrogen monoxide, while at the same time be tickled by an army of effervescent monkeys dancing to a different beat. Your move Trebek.
How could I not stay awake with all the music and light that will be around the hall. I woudn’t be suprised if a few people actually find that they woke up during the night….. hmmmm
snort some fuckin adderall its the best 4 when your tired and tastes like CANDY!!!!!!!
sleep all day saturday, wake up at 10:00pm, take a shower, get dressed, go to the orb, hang out, get back to hotel around 8, sleep some more.
dont really need tricks to stay awake, just get enough rest beforehand. its only six hours.
