The word is out in Scandinavia–the Viper Room is the place to play in LA. Following in the steps of Denmark’s LA Prostitutes, Sweden’s The Mary Onettes line up a Viper Room date on April 29.

I actually dig their 80′s-reminiscent melancholic miasmic pop but could they look any more miserable in that press photo? Lighten up, lads. Christ.

So California scored the cash from the Fed for a bullet train to from SF. Woo hoo. The ride will take a little over 2.5 hours. Or make that 2.5 hours and 10 years, as this thing is a damn decade away.

You just know snooty San Franciscans will make this about them somehow. I can just hear them snarking why would they want to cruise down to Disneyland or something.

But does this mean the bullet train to Las Vegas is officially dead or what? Maybe rails aren’t the way to go. Vegas can’t even keep their own little useless monorail going these days: it just filed for Ch. 7 BK.

How long until teleportation gets here already? Weren’t we promised teleportation by 2010? Along with our damn jetpacks, that is.

Breaking bummer out of City Hall from the LAT:

In a 9-3 vote, the Los Angeles City Council today gave its final approval to an ordinance that will shut down hundreds of medical marijuana dispensaries and impose strict rules on the location and operation of the dispensaries that are allowed.

Hundreds of dispensaries have opened in Los Angeles as the City Council debated its proposed ordinance and failed to enforce a moratorium on new dispensaries. City officials believe there are more than 500 that will be required to close under the ordinance, but some are already preparing to sue the city and collect signatures to force a referendum on the ordinance.

The ordinance also requires dispensaries to be at least 1,000 feet from other dispensaries and so-called sensitive uses, such as schools, parks and libraries. Among other restrictions, dispensaries will be required to close at 8 p.m. and will not be permitted to allow marijuana use at the stores.

Since the creation of the flier LA Ladies Choir & Marc Ribot have been added to the bill.

While we’re here, can someone tell me what the hell the deal is with Pizza! No doubt they’re fine kids to be involved here with this benefit, but I see that name in print and couldn’t be less inclined to check out a band based on their name. You don’t have to take yourselves too seriously, but just maybe slightly more serious than to name yourselves Pizza!

So this is going on this Saturday. Frankly, I have little patience for artists who work under alllowercasebunchedup names like “themegoman” with semi-functional websites (where are the Portraits?) or BBQ/record joints that apparently serve an $11 fried chicken breast (OK, “with bread and two sides”–now totally worth the 11 bones). But this show will be the public debut of themegoman’s striking, somewhat creepy portrait of The Pity Party duo seen at the left. So maybe there is no reason to go to this after all, now that you’ve seen the picture here. Enjoy.
