Weekend DVD Giveaway: Win Flyin’ Cut Sleeves Now
By Ryan - Friday November 06th 2009

cut_sleeves_coverGreat documentary that finally sees a proper release by MVD Group just this year: Flyin’ Cut Sleeves is a 60-minute portrait of gang life in the Bronx in the 1970s, with a follow-up view of the gang leaders in the 1990s and a discussion as to how their lives have been shaped as a result of their past activities. Completed in 1993, the footage jumps from 1989 to the 1970s, back to 1989, right on up to 1992, back down to 1974…you get the idea. This is from the same team that brought you Style Wars.

Send me an e-mail with your first and last name and mailing address for a shot at the DVD; contest closes end of day.

Happy Friday.

Congrats Dublab on 10 Wonderful Years
By Ryan - Thursday September 24th 2009

dublab_10Believe it: Dublab has been webcasting quality programming, throwing killer events and spinning wax all over town for ten years now. Big thanks to the entire crew for keeping things beyond bearable here in Los Angeles during that time.

To celebrate this watershed moment, the group is hosting ten glorious back-to-back anniversary events all over town over the course of ten days, beginning October 1. Said events include art shows, DJ nights, screenings, and special broadcasts. (By contrast, when Losanjealous turned four last spring, we ate a bowl of stale pretzels and read Victor’s post out loud in the Sandalwood conference room of the Marina del Rey Courtyard Marriott.) The full 10-day Dublab anniversary schedule is over on their their site and the final event threatens to be huge:

Under $10 And In No Way Advised: “Hot Dog Death March” (LA Metblogs)
By Ryan - Sunday May 31st 2009

nokidog

Ok, people. The mighty gurgitators of the LA Metblogs are having a Hot Dog Death March to the Death on June 13 (week from Saturday). Information is here. They’ll be eating at Oki-Dog, Pink’s and Skooby’s, all during the same afternoon. Maybe you join them, let us know how you fare. Me, I’m steering clear. In fact in no way and at no time do I recommend you join this event. No, I must advise against it. For reasons to remain unblogged at present I no longer condone any sort of social experiment regarding Oki-Dog, Hollywood Toll Booth, Day-glo Bastion of Toothlessness, North Fairfax, Willoughby, Tinseltown USA. I will not be at this event; I will not be at the Oki-Dog. I will be nowhere anywhere near this event, at all. Do not let this stop you.

LA Metblogs Leads the “Los Angeles Hot Dog Death March” To Sample 3 Eateries in 1 Afternoon

Calling all hot dog lovers & pop culture fans! LA Metblogs (la.metblogs.com), obsessed with covering everything quintessentially “LA,” is gathering for a mass “meat-up” over three of LA’s best-loved hot dog stands.

To Do Wednesday: Thanks Givends Benefit @ Bell Tower (Downtown)
By Ryan - Wednesday November 26th 2008

WHAT
Art and music in the soothing confines of a downtown space

WHO
More appropriately, who not? When you shove this many DJs into one three-roomed warehouse it gets difficult to keep track of all of them, but the list includes Peanut Butter Wolf, Vikter Duplaix, Shakespeare, Aurelito, Azul, Anthony Valadez, Valida, Tony Watson, Raul Campos, I&I Soundsystem, Destroyer and Jeremy Sole, for starters. Expect the unexpected.

WHERE
The Bell Tower, 764 E 9th Place, Downtown

WHEN
Tonight, 9pm-4am

WHY
It is not yet time to make the turkey. Plus, it totally beats your usual pre-holiday Wednesday routine of downing an entire $5 bum-jug of Carlo Rossi table wine while Colbert sneers at you from the Tivo machine.

Art and select live performances may occur alongside the activities of the cavalcade of DJs. Be advised. $10 suggested donation with all proceeds going to (a) DJ Dusk’s Mar Vista Family Center and (b) (mother of Dilla) MaDukes’ battle with Lupus. Read the flyer as often as you like here.

Finally, for those of you at LAX today, our all-digital, terminal-by-terminal airport bar compendium arrives shortly. Hit “F5″ every 20 seconds or so until it appears.

To Do Wednesday: ALOUD LA: Ratliff & Maupin @ Central Library
By Ryan - Wednesday November 12th 2008

bitchesHead downtown for a great discussion: NYT critic Ben Ratliff will talk with sax player/clarinetist Bennie Maupin (of Bitches Brew fame) (pictured, over there to the right) (Bitches Brew, silly, not Bennie Maupin) at 7pm this evening. Did You Know? Maupin also played on Headhunters. He’s what you might consider a heavyweight. Buy your Losanjealous editors some choice suds at Library Bar one hour prior.

The Jazz Ear
Conversations Over Music
In conversation with jazz musician and composer Bennie Maupin

In his new book, New York Times music critic Ben Ratliff listens to music with jazz greats, drawing them out about what they’re listening for and why. Here he talks with an exceptional musician not in the book: L.A. -based saxophonist Maupin, famous for his role in Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew and for his own critically acclaimed albums.

TIME: 7pm
COST: Free (Probably too late to RSVP; should be a few seats left)

Tonight at Betalevel
By Ryan - Saturday November 01st 2008

“THE DARKNESS COMPELS YOU AND BINDS YOU!”

Looking for something to top off your Day of the Dead? Head to Chinatown; Betalevel will be seating for a second Ambient Darkness presentation at midnight (the first one is starting right about….now). Pitch black room. Soothing, warm sounds. Maybe a cocktail in tow. Take it from me: the only place in the universe that might even come close to being as dark as Betalevel during one of these performances would be my front staircase, when the bulb on the landing burns out. Read the disclaimer and get prepared for the midnight seating – and what will doubtless be one of the more interesting (and oddly soothing) 1/2 hours of your Halloween weekend. Highly recommended.

Refreshments at 11pm; seating at 11:30.
Darkness promptly at Midnight! (No late arrivals).
Cost: FREE

To Do Saturday: GLOW @ Santa Monica Pier (7pm-7am)
By Ryan - Friday July 18th 2008

glowNo plans this Saturday? Lordy! Get thee to the World Famous Santa Monica Pier for GLOW, an all-night art-and-sound extravaganza free to the public. Dublab, Machine Project, KCRW DJs Garth, Raul and Jeremy Sole, our buddy Karyl Newman and a slew of additional international audio and visual artists of note will be out in full force from dusk ’til dawn, transforming the traditionally tourist-, corn dog- and seagull-choked pier area into an artistic wünderland (albeit one with slight, unmistakable yet not altogether unpleasant whiffs of tourists, seagulls and corn dogs) for some 12-odd hours. So what’s Karyl up to Saturday?

Using the stairs that connect the north side of the pier to the beach, Newman will place LEDs under the stair treads and program them to change color and rhythm in response to changes in the tide.

Count me in and do let me top off your mushroom tea, my good sir. Meantime, what’s Machine Project up to across the way?

Ferris Wheel Orchestra
A 3-part musical composition/cycle for brass, winds and percussion to be performed from the baskets of the ferris wheel. The first part will be performed at 8:30 PM, the second at midnight, and the final part at 5:30 AM on July 20th.

Totally not for me. Any poets?

Poetry Boat
A boat with three poets (Joshua Beckman, Anthony McCann and Noelle Kocot) will anchor at some distance offshore on the south side of the pier. On the beach, a site will be established to allow telephone contact between visitors and the boat. Visitors can request personal poetry readings that will be delivered from the boat.

Ok I’ll be there. Look for the man with a beard.

» Glow @ Santa Monica Pier Sat Jul 19
(Did we mention dublab?)

Did You Know?
GLOW is the only overnight event to have ever received permission to use the historic Santa Monica Pier. Make it count.
