Das Experiment @ Betalevel
The TRIBULATION cybernetic cinema series focuses on films that deal with social indoctrination and strategies of control. The first film in this series is Das Experiment (2001), based on the infamous “Stanford Prison Experiment” conducted in 1971.

Harry Shearer @ Vroman’s Bookstore
Saturday Night Live alumnus, prolific comic writer, and Simpsons voice-over actor presents and signs Not Enough Indians.

Micro Gestalt @ Orphanage Gallery
The Micro Gestalt show presents an intricate installation of over 400 tiny pieces from four artists, working collaboratively. The art is presented on numerous small blocks of wood, each sold separately, that are ultimately combined for larger effect. Through Mon 2/12.

Rememberlings @ thinkspace
A gathering of memories and past moments and sentiments caught sweetly on Lola’s carefully tended panels. Each tender scene that makes up The Rememberlings series pairs with a frame chosen specifically for its museful grace, with each one as splendidly remarkable as the work resting delicately in their care. BMG Artists’ Annual @ BLK/MRKT
In addition to exhibiting new works from the mainstays of the BMG stable, this annual salon is a chance for the gallery to present a range of exciting new voices and emerging talents from close to home and as far away as Canada, Belgium and France. Through Sat 2/17.

Dig Me Out @ Nucleus
Dig Me Out is an art project lead by Osaka’s radio station “FM802.” It’s purpose is to “dig out” new and promising artists to design stickers, and posters. Beginning in 2004, digmeout started collaborations and art shows overseas, making digmeout internationally known. Many digmeout artists are now enjoying this coverage. Through Sat 2/3.

Director’s Commentary Live! @ Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre
This week: Short Circuit 2. You’ll kick yourself if you miss one hour of live commentary from your favorite movies by the cast and crew that made them. Get yourself to the UCB Theatre to not only watch the movies, but to experience the drama that goes on behind the scenes.

Framed Fibers: A Study in Abstraction @ That Yarn Store
Framed Fibers features works by local artists that incorporate the fiber arts — knitting, crochet, felting, weaving, etc, — with an emphasis on color and texture. Through Sun 1/21.

Jim Wirt @ Hyaena Gallery
Jim will be signing his new book, Coloring Book Land, an irreverent adult-themed coloring book full of hilariously inappropriate material. He will also be exhibiting various art pieces of a similar nature.

Mind Made Housing @ Sugarbutterbex

Strange New World @ Santa Monica Museum of Art
Strange New World: Art and Design from Tijuana/Extraño Nuevo Mundo: Arte y diseño desde Tijuana is the first major traveling exhibition to explore and celebrate the vibrant interdisciplinary art scene in Tijuana, Mexico, one of the world’s leading crucibles of cultural innovation. The exhibition will feature over fifty works by twenty of Tijuana’s most important contemporary artists, architects, designers, and filmmakers. The Real Black Dahlia
As the 60th anniversary of Elizabeth Short’s murder comes ’round, we lead an exhaustive tour through the city and the myths and realities of this iconic Hollywood crime, including visits to the site where her severed body was discovered and the nearby home of a little-known and very likely suspect.

Xena In Concert
After six years of facing warlords, amazons and assorted monsters on the hit series Xena: Warrior Princess, popular actress Lucy Lawless takes on the equally daunting task of performing in front of a live audience. Lucy’s rock concert debut has already sold out The Roxy Theatre in Hollywood on January 13th with an additional show added for the following night at 8pm. Through Sun 1/14.
