By DF - Wednesday February 09th 2011 |
In these cynical times, it has become a dismal commonplace to derogate Valentine’s Day as a Hallmark-created holiday in which folks are forced to display artificial affection to no-longer-loved ones. Well, DF for one, LOVES V.D., and has always celebrated it with near-frenetic fervor. Witnesseth:
DF’s earliest relevant memory was a compulsory grade-school v-day card exchange. Oh, it was exciting! So much so that I lost all bladder control, wetting myself copiously and getting sent home from school. My grammar-school chums still call me “Cap’n Pee.” Actually, so do my parents.
A decade or so on, teenaged DF used Val Day as an occasion to reveal his amorousness to a secret high-school crush, and went for the gusto, showing up at the lucky lady’s door dressed in a sexy leather codpiece, with a dozen spiny roses ‘twixt my teeth, and slathered in oodles of body chocolate. As it happens, I did not win the fair maiden’s heart, but on the plus side, her football-coach father hugged my neck with his big strong hands for almost a half-hour!
A few years later, DF won 2d prize (and $10!) in a Valentine’s Day poetry contest with the immortal quatrain, “Roses are red/And boy are they thorny,/Please be my V-Day date,/’Cause man, am I … hopelessly enamored of your wit and charm!”
More recently, DF hit the singles scene, and strutted on over to the sexiest party in town—the Valentine’s Day Lonelyhearts Extravaganza Deluxe at the El Monte CourtYard Marriott (cost of admission a mere $45, including a free champagne toast!). Admittedly, the male/female ratio was undefined (because you can’t divide by zero), but toward the end of the evening a really hot game of strip Dungeons-and-Dragons broke out, and DF totally got to roll his twenty-sided die (if you know what I’m sayin’).
So, actually, in retrospect it looks like St. Val’s hasn’t exactly been a lovin’ bonanza for DF. But this year I’ve found a can’t-miss option for a V-day good time: hot, full-contact, all-girl roller derby action with the LA Derby Dolls! ‘Cause whether you’re single and lonely, or attached and bored out of your skull, all right-minded people share one love–the love of roller derby. So get fool asses down to the Doll Factory this weekend to see the LADD regular season kick off as the discipline-lovin’ policeladies of the Sirens seek to lay down the law on the two-time Champs runners-up out of San Diego, the Swarm. Oh it’s gonna be good, as this romantic bout preview amply illustrates. So get yer tix ASAP, and come out for V.D. at the DF (Doll Factory) with LADD and DF (the derby writer, that is, not the Doll Factory). All right, that was confusing. Just come to the damn bout because it will be awesome. That is all.

Forrest Gump put it best when he astutely stated, “Life is like a box of cupcakes. You never know what you’re gonna get.” The crazy thing is how right Tom Hanks always is–life is indeed like a box of cupcakes… especially at the 2011 Los Angeles Cupcake Challenge, the annual cupcake clash between Los Angeles and Orange County’s top bakers.
Last year, I admittedly made some mistakes. I ate too many cupcakes in too little time and paid for it. This year, as an official event judge? I ate too many cupcakes in too little time and… felt just dandy walking out of the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel. The difference? For some reason there were eight less entries in the Challenge. SO, I ONLY ATE 32 CUPCAKES IN AN HOUR IN 2011. Way easier to digest.
And, now, a Lilliputiancake-by-Lilliputiancake breakdown of all 32 entries and full photo gallery below…
TRADITIONAL CATEGORY
1. Chocolate W/ Meringue (Bitter Sweet Treats) – A honey brittle adornment demonstrated the creativeness that made baker Danielle Keene a finalist on the first season of “Top Chef: Just Desserts.” The overall cupcake? Showed why she didn’t win “T.C.”
2. Chocolate S’Mores (Blue Cupcake) – S’Mores was a trendy cupcake in the 2011 competition; Blue Cupcake separated themselves from the pack courtesy of a surprisingly rich fudge insert in the middle of the cake.
3. Red Velvet (Cake Pop) – The cake popsicle (rolled cake covered by a chocolate shell), much like the bagel chip, seems to have arisen from a baker’s ingenuity regarding the reuse of old product. Cake Pop’s Red Velvet transcends this designation and should be your first cake popsicle if you seek such a thrill.
4. Chocolate Zin (Double D Cupcakes) – Awesome chocolate cake. Awesome chocolate frosting. Awesome red wine tasting center. Awesome.
5. Abuelita’s Chocolate Cupcake (Frandise Pastries) – Very tasty cake due to hints of cinnamon, cayenne and chunks of Nestle Abuelita chocolate.
6. Salted Caramel Chocolate (Goodie Girls) – I love salted caramel. I love chocolate. I didn’t love this cupcake.
7. Bridal White Cake (Hansen’s) – For the second consecutive year Hansen’s reminded me just because you make everyone’s favorite birthday and wedding cakes, it does not mean you automatically make good cupcakes.
8. Mallow Delight (Hollicakes) – Tasted like a Ho-Ho. Still not sure if that’s good or bad.
9. Red Velvet (Jus Minis) – The best cupcake in the Traditional category. More on this RV later…
10. Red Velvet (My Delight) – Incredibly moist cake, but nothing else distinguished this cupcake from the seemingly millions of Red Velvets I’ve had in recent years.
11. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Sugar Babies Cupcakery) – A regal name for a commoner’s cupcake at best.
12. Pink Velvet (Sweet E’s) – The thick frosting was tasty. The cake – well, like all things pink, it sucked.
13. Chocolate Truffle (The Cake Mamas) – Although the cake was a tad dry, the chocolate mouse frosting with chocolate shaving swirls certainly made up for it.
14. Red Velvet (The Cake Shop) – Not sure how to describe the taste, but it almost didn’t even taste like Red Velvet. What did it taste like? A boring cupcake.

With KCRW’s room-packing power on full display, a well-groomed crowd turned up to The Echo to catch young singer-songwriter Tristen’s proper L.A. debut last Wednesday. Originally from Illinois, now Nashville-based, Tristen’s craft is mature beyond her years, arranging country, bluegrass, Americana roots, even a little folk, into a tasty melange with pop hooks to spare. With a big voice that belies her small stature, she conjures a bit of the honey sweetness of a Tanya Donelly with maybe a hint of Stevie Nicks at the other end of the spectrum. I wouldn’t directly compare her to a Jenny Lewis type, but that might be a rough reference point for those of you who want those kind of shortcuts.
Her backing band on guitar, bass & drums—“The Ringers”, as she calls them–are a tight unit and have a good sense of when to lay back and when to turn it up. While her new LP, Charlatans At The Garden Gate (American Myth), is a warm, vintage analog-feeling production, with lush key and string arrangements, live, the tunes strip down nicely to rawer takes. You can see she’s played these tunes out a lot in the way she sings around the beat with ease, sometimes punctuating a verse with a little growl or a country whoop here and there. As she switches off from electric guitar to an occasional ukulele, you see there’s room to cut loose in these tunes, so the band’s time on the road should season the songs and open them up. A bit of awkward between song banter with the crowd only turns up her charm. I would not be surprised if she plays a bigger room, say a bit farther west next time through L.A.
