FOO WATCH: Grohl & Company Sporting Fake Mustaches In Valencia Right This Fucking Minute
By
Ryan - Friday September 28th 2007
LOSANJEALOUS (Losanjealous):: Our network of informants has gleaned that Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters, who blew up the Fonda Monday prior, are running around the Valencia Town Center with fake mustaches as part of a self-described “70s inspired soap opera” video shoot right this fucking minute. Across town at this same time in your cubicle sources report you are shunning Excel, replying succinctly albeit politically to three e-mails while being mindful to carbon-copy your boss, reading losanjealous.com, considering stretching the legs for a third (!) cup of coffee in the kitchen and beginning to think about lunch.
Grainy, topical, on-set photos after the jump. Note Spaceland-inspired drumkit backdrop. (Thanks Renee for the pointer!)

Canadian Coffee Break: Regarding Poutine
The Canadian Coffee Break brings together some of the finest Canadian minds in Southern California every week for a topical, lively round-tablesque discussion over very dark coffee. Won’t you join us.
TOPIC #12: POUTINE
Week Twelve has arrived. To celebrate, I finally shagged over to Dusty’s in Silverlake and tried the poutine which, from what I understand, roughly translates to “Fuck Me, I’m experiencing coronary thrombosis albeit deliciously so” from Québécois.
Your topic, naturally, is poutine. I would like to know a few things:
- What, where and when was the best poutine you’ve ever had in your life? What made it so?
- Wikipedia suggests that poutine [pronunciation] is very popular at ski resorts, not unlike “steak chili in a breadbowl.” Makes sense; it’s a heavy comfort food. Have you ever had poutine at a ski resort in Canada? Elaborate.
- Have you ever made your own poutine? How was it?
-
As cultural ambassador from your province, you have been tasked with introducing poutine into the menu of five (5) Los Angeles restaurants. Which restaurants do you choose and why?
Sean Chrétien
Though you asked for joyous stories of poutine past, I’m going to have to relay an anecdote of the worst poutine I’ve ever had. You see, I’ve been itching to lambaste a certain breed of poutine since late July – the pseudo-poutine of fine dining eateries in Washington state. Though I was uber-close to the Canadian border two months ago, I decided to order some pou at the Steelhead Diner in Seattle, hoping for a truly visceral/flashbacky experience. Steelhead is situated adjacent to Pike Place, perhaps the most heavily frequented tourist attraction in the Pacific Northwest; however, exhaustive approbation for the joint led me to believe that the poutine would surpass expectations. Not so. Though it veritably was poutine – cheese curds and gravy intact – something was horribly amiss. Was it the presentation? I must admit when my poutine was most formally tabled at my table (Figure 1?), I felt slightly estranged; I was used to eating my pou on dirty city streets out of Styrofoam cups (AKA properly – though I’ve never pou’d at a ski resort).

Arcade Fire & LCD Soundsystem at the Bowl
By
Victor - Sunday September 23rd 2007

“We rented the biggest disco ball we could find,” James Murphy shares with us between songs. Leading the LCD Soundsystem live incarnation—Nancy Whang on synths, Pat Mahoney, the world’s tightest drummer, Al Doyle on guitar, Phil Skarich on bass–through a near perfect set at the Hollywood Bowl, James made a strong case for a new breed of no nonsense rock n’ roll front man.
On what’s probably the biggest stage he’s ever played he deconstructs and demystifies the event before us at every chance he gets between songs—pointing out the LED timer on stage that clocks their allotted time; pointing out his newly acquired high tensile mic stand; and ultimately confiding to us “You what to know the funny thing about this? This is our job!” There is more than irony at play here. The thing is, James respects his audience. He doesn’t insult our intelligence by attempting to maintain any kind of rock façade. This is the guy after all who sings, “It’s a fat guy in a T-shirt doing all the singing.” (He’s sporting a wrinkled button down oxford and blazer this night, in case you were wondering.) He gets it, knows we get it, so cuts the shit and just give us the rock and the grooves.

Canadians on Canadians: Arcade Fire @ Hollywood Bowl, 9/20/07
By
Sean - Saturday September 22nd 2007
Sean, a trusted weekly coffee breaker, shares some words and images from last Thursday’s gala show featuring fellow Canadians Arcade Fire. -Ed

LCD Soundsystem/Arcade Fire
Hollywood Bowl, 9/20
“This place smells like Dodger Dogs but it feels like rock n’ roll.”
– Collin “Boots” Tiegs, in a rapturous fervor.
So the last time I saw the Arcade Fire they weren’t happy campers. It was an admittedly asinine KROQ show – something about an ‘Inland Invasion’ – and the bro surplus was inexplicable. I recall Richard Reed Parry running into the crowd and chucking drum sticks at the monitors and stage while Win Butler made pseudo-political statements that fell on deaf ears. Thankfully, tonight was a totally different beast. The Arcade Fire were veritably “in it,” aided and abetted by a crowd that ate up every last granular element of the raucous spectacle. In all their earnest glory, the Arcade Fire truly tried, as they most always do, to affect us with their wicked rad theatrics. From opener ‘Black Mirror’ to the epic encore ‘Wake Up’ finale, the troupe de Arcade exuded a joy that was matched if not trumped by a unified Bowl audience. Of course, credit is due to the inimitable LCD Soundsystem (I missed Wild Light) for priming the crowd.
